Junior in the title. Two years in the requirements.

By Elie Majorel, operator of PegelPublished 28 Sept 2026

Pegel found 98 Berlin listings with junior in the title. The experience paragraphs tell several different stories, from two years already worked to a university project that counts.

1KOMMA5° put "(Junior)" in the title of an SEO and AI marketing job. Further down, the experience line said: "Mindestens 2-5 Jahre relevante Erfahrung". Two to five years of relevant experience, with "at least" in front of it. That was the wording in Pegel's September 28 capture of the advert.

A different Berlin advert, STARK's Junior FPGA Engineer, specified "0-2 years of experience" and explicitly valued internships or personal hardware projects. Both carried the same seniority word. A person applying for a first job would read them very differently.

Pegel found 98 listings with "junior" in the title that morning, across 61 companies. Twenty-five gave a number of years for the junior option, though those numbers included zero and some came with alternatives.

Of 98 junior-titled Berlin listings across 61 companies, 25 had a numerical experience expectation identified. The other 73 were not counted as zero-experience roles.

Each square is one listing record in the September 28 capture. Open a chart to read it at full size.

The years need their small print

Of the 25 numerical statements, three allowed zero years, direct entry after graduation, or experience up to two years. Two gave a preferred range. Four more explicitly counted internships or other alternatives. The remaining 16 stated a positive number without those qualifications; two of those were approximate.

So a count of adverts mentioning years is a poor count of doors closed to graduates. "One year, including internships" leaves a different route in from two years of professional employment. An upper limit of two years is different again.

The other 73 listings did not have a numerical expectation identified for their junior option. They can still ask for experience. Some do, using phrases such as "first practical experience" or "several years". Treating that group as jobs requiring none would make the chart simpler and the advice worse.

The 25 numerical statements split into 16 positive expectations, 4 that counted internships or project alternatives, 3 zero-year or up-to-two-year routes, and 2 preferred ranges. These are wording categories, not rejection rules.

An internship can count, if the advert says so

heyData's Junior Business Automation and AI Manager asked for at least a year and explicitly included internships or working-student positions. Someone with that experience can see where they fit before deciding whether to apply.

Scalable Capital's junior Kotlin and Java role did not attach a number of years to its practical experience requirement. It accepted experience gained through internships or working-student roles, and through personal or university projects. That advert sits outside the 25, despite being unusually clear about what an applicant can bring.

Neither example promises that an application will succeed. Both give the applicant something usable: a way to match work they have actually done to the requirement. A project can be discussed. A vague instruction to have experience leaves rather more guessing.

Selected examples from the capture: 1KOMMA5 asked for 2 to 5 years; STARK specified 0 to 2 and valued projects; heyData counted internships toward its one-year expectation; Scalable Capital accepted practical experience from projects without specifying years.

One advert can contain two levels

flaconi's "(Junior) CRM Manager" advert, last observed by Pegel on September 25, invited applications at both junior and manager level. The junior paragraph asked for initial practical CRM experience. The manager paragraph asked for two or more years.

A search for "junior" in the title and "2+ years" in the description would count this as another junior experience requirement. The advert itself separated the two. Pegel excluded the manager threshold from the 25. The original link now redirects to flaconi's careers index; this observation refers to the retained description.

Parentheses do quite a lot of work in these titles. Sometimes they cover more than one level. Sometimes the body presents just one set of requirements. The punctuation alone cannot settle which version an applicant is looking at.

Junior does not promise a first job

An employer can reasonably call a position junior within its own team while expecting someone who has already worked elsewhere. The difficulty for an applicant is finding out which meaning applies. A title gives them a place to start looking; the experience paragraph decides whether the search was useful.

For recruiters, the examples above suggest a fairly modest edit. Say whether internships count. Where a project can demonstrate the required skill, say that too. If one advert covers two levels, give each its own requirements, as flaconi did.

This is also a narrower story than the current argument about AI and the first job. LinkedIn's August labour-market report found entry-level hiring weakening across several countries, with larger declines in some occupations where AI can assist the work. It cautioned against explaining the broad slowdown through AI. Pegel's snapshot cannot establish a cause, or even whether experience requirements have risen.

It can show an applicant where to look. Before counting yourself out on a junior listing, read the sentence after the number. At heyData, that sentence included working-student experience. At Scalable Capital, a university project was among the accepted routes.

Method and sources

The capture ran on September 28, 2026, around 05:27 to 05:29 UTC. It contained 3,428 active Berlin listing records across 411 companies. Berlin means the stored location contains "Berlin", matching Pegel's board. A title search for junior, jr, graduate or entry-level returned 98 records; all 98 contained "junior". This is a title-defined sample, not every entry-level opening in Berlin.

Experience passages were extracted from the retained employer descriptions and reviewed in context. The count of 25 includes written-out numbers, preferences and upper bounds. It excludes contract duration, benefits and requirements belonging only to a higher-level option. Each advert appears in one chart category: zero-year routes and upper bounds take priority, then preferences, then internship or project alternatives. For example, STARK sits in the zero-year group although it also values internships. These categories do not measure screening decisions.

Records have distinct ATS identifiers, but may describe overlapping vacancies or language variants. Ninety-six of the 98 had been seen within the preceding 24 hours. The flaconi CRM advert and a Tomorrow Bio listing had last been seen on September 25. During the afternoon source check, the 1KOMMA5° URL returned 404. A dated capture is not a guarantee that an advert is still available, and a disappearing advert does not establish a hire.

The dated evidence notes and aggregate calculations accompany this article. Full job descriptions remain in Pegel's private research files.
