About this search

Berlin's fintech sector has a specific relationship with the German language: the customer-facing layer often needs it, and the engineering layer often does not. That split is cleaner in fintech than in most other sectors, and understanding it makes the no-German filter more useful here. A compliance analyst or a customer operations hire at a Berlin neobank will likely need German to interact with regulators and customers. The backend engineer building the payment processing service almost certainly does not. Pegel classifies per role, so the jobs on this page are the ones where the evidence points to English being sufficient.

The companies in Berlin fintech are well-documented: N26, Solaris, Raisin, Trade Republic, and Clark, plus a longer tail of payment, insurance and lending startups. Many of them grew up targeting European or global markets from the start, which pushed their engineering cultures toward English. The ones that started with a German consumer focus often still ran international engineering teams because the talent demand outpaced the local supply. Either way, the engineering function at most Berlin fintechs runs in English.

What kinds of roles pass the no-German filter in this sector: backend engineering is the largest cohort. Data and ML roles come next, particularly at the companies with fraud detection or credit risk products. Platform and DevOps roles are also consistently no-German. Product and design roles are more variable; some fintech product teams work in English throughout, others are closer to the German regulatory and customer context and need more language engagement.

Pegel pulls these from each company's live ATS feed and refreshes three times a day from Monday to Saturday. Nothing here is stale.

Questions

Why do so many Berlin fintechs run engineering in English?
Two reasons compound each other. First, fintech requires sophisticated engineering skills that were always scarce in any single country; Berlin fintechs hired internationally early, from Spain and Poland, from India and the UK, and English was the only viable working language. Second, many Berlin fintechs launched with European ambitions and built their product documentation, API specs, and internal tooling in English from day one. That creates a self-reinforcing English culture that persists even as the companies mature.
Which Berlin fintech teams sometimes require German despite having mostly English-speaking engineering?
Compliance and legal, invariably. The German regulatory framework requires German-language filings and German-speaking regulatory liaison. Customer operations, for consumer-facing fintechs. Some data analyst and business intelligence roles, where the stakeholders presenting to are German-speaking executives. None of those appear in the no-German filter here.
Does working at a fintech without speaking German limit career mobility within the company?
In engineering and technical IC roles, not typically. In product roles, it depends on whether the product team has exposure to customer conversations that happen in German. Moving into a general management role at a German consumer fintech without German would become a limitation over time. For technical roles, the constraint does not appear.
