- Two reasons compound each other. First, fintech requires sophisticated engineering skills that were always scarce in any single country; Berlin fintechs hired internationally early, from Spain and Poland, from India and the UK, and English was the only viable working language. Second, many Berlin fintechs launched with European ambitions and built their product documentation, API specs, and internal tooling in English from day one. That creates a self-reinforcing English culture that persists even as the companies mature.
- Which Berlin fintech teams sometimes require German despite having mostly English-speaking engineering?
- Compliance and legal, invariably. The German regulatory framework requires German-language filings and German-speaking regulatory liaison. Customer operations, for consumer-facing fintechs. Some data analyst and business intelligence roles, where the stakeholders presenting to are German-speaking executives. None of those appear in the no-German filter here.
- Does working at a fintech without speaking German limit career mobility within the company?
- In engineering and technical IC roles, not typically. In product roles, it depends on whether the product team has exposure to customer conversations that happen in German. Moving into a general management role at a German consumer fintech without German would become a limitation over time. For technical roles, the constraint does not appear.
