Job description

Your Mission

This is a company built for growth.

When you join exmox, you're stepping onto a global, highly competitive playing field, solving real problems in environments that push you beyond your comfort zone. We move fast, cut the noise, and focus on what actually matters, because in our industry, speed wins.
With 50M+ platform downloads, we're rapidly scaling one of the most exciting innovations in mobile gaming: a rewarded user engagement and acquisition platform that helps players discover, and engage with games they enjoy - creating lasting value for both players and gaming studios.

As Tech Lead (f/m/x) you won't just be "coding tickets" or maintaining legacy systems. You'll be the technical leader of the team at the heart of our Python and Go platform, setting technical direction, raising the engineering bar and staying hands-on in the codebase, with no people management required. You build it, you own it, working close to product and data and seeing the impact of your work in production. At exmox, we're embracing AI as part of how we work, not just what we build. We use AI tools to work smarter, cut down on repetitive tasks and spend our time where it actually moves the needle. If that mindset speaks to you, you'll fit right in.

If you're excited by complex systems, high traffic, data-driven decisions, and the chance to grow by solving challenging problems, we want to hear from you.

What You'll Own:
  • Technical leadership & architecture: As the team's primary technical leader, you set technical direction and lead architecture and system design decisions, helping engineers balance speed, quality and long-term maintainability. You also collaborate with other Tech Leads and senior engineers on broader technical decisions, keeping system boundaries clear.
  • Technical delivery: You are accountable for the technical execution of the team's work. You turn product and business goals into executable plans, surface risks and dependencies early, and help the team deliver reliably from idea to production.
  • Engineering quality, reliability & system health: You set and maintain the engineering bar for the team. You make sure systems are observable, reliable, testable and maintainable, and that production issues lead to concrete improvements. You proactively address technical debt, reliability risks and architectural weaknesses when they threaten our ability to move quickly and safely.
  • Knowledge sharing & mentoring: You guide engineers through their day-to-day work, sharing context and best practices, and help the team level up through code reviews and technical knowledge-sharing. You create ownership rather than becoming a bottleneck, stepping in when complexity or risk requires it. You help engineers grow into greater technical ownership and create more decision-making capacity within the team.
  • Hands-on contribution: Alongside your leadership responsibilities, you remain an active contributor to the codebase, especially in technically complex or high-leverage areas, while ensuring the broader team retains ownership of the systems it builds.
  • AI-assisted engineering practices: You champion AI-assisted engineering as a daily habit, using AI tools to accelerate development, testing, investigation and documentation while maintaining strong engineering judgment and review standards. You help the team adopt effective practices rather than simply increasing tool usage.
  • Cross-functional collaboration: You work closely with Product, Data and internal business stakeholders to turn business goals and operational problems into effective technical solutions, balancing pragmatic delivery with long-term system health.

What You Bring

  • Backend engineering expertise: Strong hands-on experience building and operating production backend systems with Python. You'll work with Kafka, PostgreSQL and Redis day to day, so solid experience with these or comparable technologies is expected. Experience with Go is a plus, and you're comfortable working across both. FastAPI or comparable modern API frameworks is also a plus.
  • Distributed systems background: Practical experience with event-driven architectures and microservices, and a solid understanding of how to keep them reliable and maintainable at scale.
  • Technical leadership: Experience leading technical discussions, guiding other engineers and raising the bar on engineering quality and best practices, without necessarily having formal people-management experience.
  • Delivery ownership: You can take an ambiguous product or business goal and turn it into a concrete technical approach, sequence the work, manage technical risks and help a team get it safely into production.
  • Production mindset: You are comfortable owning systems beyond implementation. You think about observability, failure modes, operational readiness and how systems behave under real production load.
  • Business-oriented engineering: You are interested in understanding the business mechanics behind the systems you build and use that context to make better technical trade-offs.
  • AI-native mindset: You genuinely use AI tools, including coding assistants and automation, as part of your daily workflow, and you're comfortable helping others use them effectively and responsibly.
  • Communication & mentoring skills: You can explain technical concepts clearly, share knowledge generously, and help others work through problems rather than simply solving everything yourself.

How We Win

  • Speed is the feature. Speed beats rocket science. We move fast, test fast, and multiply our pace with AI, because action creates information and small wins compound. A fast failure is a lesson we learn from, a slow one is a problem we can't afford.
  • Focus on the essential. Done is better than perfect. We stay focused on what actually moves us forward and protect people's time from anything that doesn't. We're direct in how we communicate too, no rambling, no unnecessary detail.
  • See it. Own it. Solve it. The first to see it is best placed to fix it. We're not a place for comfort, we're a place for doers. "Not my job" isn't in our vocabulary, if you spot something, you help make sure it gets solved.
  • Respect others. Trust multiplies. Respect is non-negotiable. We disagree with ideas, never with people. Trust here is built the same way it is anywhere, through consistency, a thank you, a moment of listening, and owning your mistakes.
  • Perks that help you focus on what matters. Transport subsidy, learning budget, wellness and gym, workation, bi-weekly team lunches, and more. The perks are great, but the real reason people join and stay is the challenge, the ownership, and the drive to win together.
Please note: this is not a remote only position, we offer you a flexible hybrid model here in Hamburg, Germany - working from home on Mondays & Fridays, coming to the office on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday!
